The features in each game in the Soulcalibur series often have the same features all throughout, but they may also vary from one game to another. In the first game, the player will be able to check an incoming strike and push it back to make way for a free hit, which is known as the Guard Impact System. This requires an efficient and perfect timing but it may also result in an advantage for the other party.
